Curious about how Balè started and who is behind the brand? Today we're chatting with co-founder Lita to learn all about her inspiration, favorite pieces, and new homeware trends.

What inspired you to start Balè?

Balè, previously Bali Bungalow was inspired by the art of design and craftsmanship I grew up with in Indonesia. In the world of mass produced furniture and everything else, our mission is to preserve the heritage and culture of handmade furniture and decor and provide great quality products that will last a lifetime.

Can you share a bit about the creative process behind designing pieces for Balè? What makes each item special?

At Balè, we focus on timeless look and functional design when we design our collections. It's not only about designing aesthetically pleasing products but also ensuring that every item serves a purpose. We also focus on clean lines that create a minimalist aesthetic that exudes elegance and sophistication.

Teak is a major material in your collections. Why do you love working with teak, and how do you ensure it’s sustainably sourced?

I grew up with teak furniture and my family still has the same teak furniture to this day. Teak is one of the strongest and most durable hardwood, making it an investment for years to come. Teak has a beautiful color and grain and it looks more beautiful as it ages. Our teak is grown on Indonesian plantations that are controlled by government (Perhutani). At Balè, we work with select artisans who source their teak from Perhutani. Our teak is all SLVK certified, certification that guarantees the legality and sustainability of its timber exports, most importantly teak.

What role do you think artisanal furniture plays in creating a tranquil space at home?

We focus on clean lines - simplifying and decluttering our home to create a peaceful and calming environment. By removing unnecessary distractions and focusing on what truly matters and what we really need, we can create a space that promotes serenity and clarity. That's what Balè homewares is all about.

What’s your favorite piece in the current Balè collection, and why does it stand out to you?

My latest favorite is the Solas lounge chair. It's a stunning piece that instantly elevates any space. It's designed with durabiliy, comfort, and indoor outdoor living in mind. It's laid back yet luxurious. At Balè, we always try to create with longevity and style in mind.

What has been the most rewarding part of running Balè Homewares so far?

To be able to bring in and promote the heritage and culture of crafsmanship and artisanal work from Indonesia. This work has been passed on through generations, and to be able to give back to, and ensure, a circular economy to the artisan community. This has become the pillar and focus of our business model.

What trends in home decor are you most excited about, and how do you see Balè evolving in the future?

I'm most excited that more and more people can appreciate the importance of choosing sustainable, handmade products for their home. It's not only a trend, it's a way of living. I'm so excited for where Balè homewares is heading.
